Prisoners [Tęsknota]

The crowd in Philippi joined in the attack on Paul and Silas,
and the magistrates had them stripped
and ordered them to be beaten with rods.
After inflicting many blows on them,
they threw them into prison
and instructed the jailer to guard them securely.
When he received these instructions, he put them in the innermost cell
and secured their feet to a stake.About midnight, while Paul and Silas were praying
and singing hymns to God as the prisoners listened,
there was suddenly such a severe earthquake
that the foundations of the jail shook;
all the doors flew open, and the chains of all were pulled loose. 
When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open,
he drew his sword and was about to kill himself,
thinking that the prisoners had escaped.
But Paul shouted out in a loud voice,
“Do no harm to yourself; we are all here.
He asked for a light and rushed in and,
trembling with fear, he fell down before Paul and Silas.
Then he brought them out and said,
“Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus
and you and your household will be saved.”
So they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to everyone in his house.
He took them in at that hour of the night and bathed their wounds;
then he and all his family were baptized at once.
He brought them up into his house and provided a meal
and with his household rejoiced at having come to faith in God.
Acts 16: 22-34
 

This morning I heard a homily on this passage that highlighted something I’ve never noticed before–Paul says “we are all here,” meaning none of the prisoners ran away when they had an opportunity. If you go a little further up in the passage the writer St. Luke notes that the prisoners listened as Paul and Silas “were praying and singing hymns to God.” And he notes that “the chains of ALL were pulled loose.” So, wait a second–these prisoners are all set free, but they don’t leave when they have the opportunity. Why?

Could it be that staying and listening to the prayers and songs of Paul and Silas was sweeter than freedom? Could it be that those things actually are freedom itself? Could it be that before their chains were unbound, hearing the Gospel had left the prisoners unbound in a more fundamental way? Could it be that they’ve found the pearl of great price, for which they are willing to do anything–even stay prison?

And isn’t that just like us… we find that the world is a prison, that traps us with lies, deceit, unkindness, or we trap ourselves in sin, but then, suddenly, we meet The One who makes our existence meaningful, whose peaceful love shows us the true order of the universe. And so we stay to listen to Him, to try to understand better the work He has laid out for us. We risk danger or we appear foolish, but suddenly those externals matter a whole lot less. Because we’ve experienced an earthquake, a taste of freedom, and we want more.

Let us all live in freedom! Let us allow Christ to set us free even in those parts that we hide from everyone, including ourselves. Let us allow Him to break down all barriers that keep us from a more complete union with Him.

Wesenheiten in der Wissenschaftstheorie [Scholastiker]

Argumente für die bewusstseinsunabhängige, also objektive Realität von Wesenheiten werden seit einiger Zeit auch von Vertretern einer Wissenschaftstheorie geliefert, die als „Neue Essentialisten“ (New Essentialists) bezeichnet werden. Bekannte Vertreter dieser wissenschaftstheoretischen Richtung sind Nancy Cartwright oder Brain Ellis. Neue Essentialisten vertreten die Auffassung, dass es die Aufgabe der Naturwissenschaften ist, Wesenheiten und kausale Kräfte (Dispositionen) zu entdecken und zu erforschen. Kausale Kräfte sind dieser Auffassung entsprechend Kräfte, die Dinge aufgrund ihrer Wesenheiten besitzen, bzw. die die Dinge wesentlich besitzen. Hierfür wurden von den Neuen Essentialisten weitere Argumente für die Objektivität von Wesenheiten genannt.




So betont z.B. Nancy Cartwright (1999), dass die Theorie David Humes, dass die Wissenschaft nichts anderes untersucht als bestimmte Regularitäten in der Natur auf der Grundlage von Beobachtungen mit erheblichen Problemen konfrontiert ist. Solche Regularitäten sind nämlich selten zu beobachten und sie sind in gewöhnlichen Umständen überhaupt nicht zu beobachten. So werden Studierende, die ein Physikstudium aufnehmen sehr bald mit Idealisierungen vertraut gemacht, wie z.B. einer Oberfläche ohne jede Reibung oder mit der Tatsache, dass Gesetze wie die Newtonschen Gesetze der Gravitation genau genommen das Verhalten von Körpern in Umständen beschreiben, in denen es überhaupt keinerlei störende Faktoren gibt, die auf dir einwirken, Umstände also, die es tatsächlich nirgendwo gibt. Zudem erfassen Physiker eine Regularität als ein Naturgesetz nicht nach einer ganzen Reihe von Versuchen. Vielmehr ziehen sie Schlüsse aus wenigen hochspezialisierten Experimenten, die unter sehr artifiziellen Bedingungen durchgeführt werden.

All dies aber ist nun nicht mit der Idee der Wissenschaft vereinbar, nach der diese mit der Katalogisierung von beobachteten Regularitäten beschäftigt ist. Allerdings trifft diese Darstellung der tatsächlichen Tätigkeit der Wissenschaft nach Cartwrights Auffassung die aristotelische Auffassung der Wissenschaften. Nach dieser Theorie besteht die Aufgabe der Wissenschaft in der Entdeckung der verborgenen Naturen, bzw. Wesenheiten der Dinge. Die experimentelle Praxis in den Naturwissenschaften besteht darin, dass Naturwissenschaftler nach den Kräften der Dinge suchen, die diese zeigen, wenn sie von abgeleiteten Bedingungen abstrahieren. Wenn sie aus nur einem einzigen oder wenigen Experimenten auf ein Ergebnis schließen, so zeigt dies, dass diese Kräfte in der Weise genommen werden, dass sie die Natur des Dinges wiederspiegeln, die universal für alle Dinge dieser Art gelten.

Ähnlich argumentiert Brain Ellis (2002), das Wesenheiten notwendig sind um die Naturgesetze zu begründen und dass die tatsächlichen Ergebnisse der modernen Wissenschaften die Behauptung unterstützen, dass es natürliche Artengibt, von denen jede ihre eigene Wesenheit besitzt. Allerdings bestreitet Ellis seltsamerweise, dass dies auch für biologische Arten gilt. Hier liegt einer der Unterschiede zu scholastischen Denkern. Zumindest kann man aber auch mit Hinweis auf die Neuen Essentialisten nicht bestreiten, dass es zumindest einige Wesenheiten gibt.

Hinzu kommen aber metaphysische Überlegungen, die die Realität der Wesenheiten unbestreitbar macht. Wenn ein Ding eine substanzielle Form hat und wenn es auf Grund dieser Form unreduzierbare kausale Kräfte besitzt und wenn diese Kräfte auf die Hervorbringung bestimmter Wirkungen als ihren Finalursachen gerichtet sind usw., dann ist schwer verständlich, wie man die Realität von Wesenheiten bestreiten kann.

Ein Argument gegen die Objektivität von Wesenheiten das diese bestreitet, in dem es behauptet, diese seien konventionell, also durch menschliche Übereinkunft festgelegt und insofern bewusstseinsabhängig, wurde von Crawford Elder vorgestellt. Damit die Behauptung, Wesenheiten seien bloß konventionell konsistent ist, so Elder, müsste der Konventionalist dies auch vom menschlichen Bewusstsein selbst behaupten, wie er es von allem anderen auch behauptet. Dies bedeutet aber, dass das, was das Bewusstsein zu dem macht, was es ist, auch bewusstseinsabhängig sein muss. Wenn man aber behauptet, etwas sei bewusstseinsabhängig, dann bedeutet dies, dass diese Behauptung die Existenz des Bewusstseins voraussetzt und deshalb sowohl ontologisch als auch zeitlich später als die Existenz des Bewusstseins ist. Das Bewusstsein wäre früher als das, von dem es abhängig ist, von dem also, was nur existiert relativ auf die Weise unseres Denkens und Sprechens. Also würde der Konventionalist behaupten, dass das Bewusstsein sowohl früher als auch später als es selbst ist und dies ist zweifellos inkohärent. Zumindest muss es also eine Wesenheit geben, nämlich die unseres Bewusstseins.

Diese Argumente sind, so glaube ich, so stark, dass sie die Realität der Wesenheiten bestätigen.
