Holy Communion for the divorced and remarried but not for those who refuse the Church tax? [The hermeneutic of continuity]

Edward Pentin's "The Rigging of a Vatican Synod" (links below) is well worth reading. It is subtitled "An Investigation into Alleged Manipulation at the Extraordinary Synod on the Family." One commentator suggested that Ignatius Press must have insisted on the question mark in the main title and the "alleged" in the subtitle. I'm not sure this is fair. Edward Pentin does present a studiously balanced account, giving quotations and arguments from both sides. The evidence that is presented is clear enough, but it is not forced on the reader.

We English are noted for understatement and it can be a powerful debating tool. Pentin genuinely leaves the reader free to make up his own mind, having taken the trouble to obtain replies from those who would take issue with the idea that the Synod was rigged. This results in the case being made more clearly and convincingly than it would be in a tendentious and one-sided account.

For anyone interested in the Synod, Edward Pentin's book is an essential contribution to the growing corpus of meta-studies on the proceedings. There are many nuggets of interest. One which jumped out of the (virtual) page was the comment of Professor Stephan Kampowski in relation to the Kirchensteuer, the German Church Tax. The Catholic Church in Germany receives about £5 billion each year give or take a few million. To stop paying the tax, you have to make an official declaration that you are leaving the Church.

I am not a moral theologian, but I guess that my colleagues in that discipline might be able to argue that there are grounds for making some sort of mental reservation on the grounds that you do not wish to actually renounce the faith, but wish to pay a little less in support of the Church according to your means. This would be difficult to justify, but plausible - as plausible, say, as arguing that your marriage is dead because you were both a bit young, or felt that you didn't take it all seriously and have now grown apart. However there are different approaches to the two cases.

Whereas many of the German bishops are in the vanguard of the campaign to admit the divorced and remarried to Holy Communion, no such mercy is shown to those who refuse the Kirchensteuer.

In September 2012, the German Bishops issued a decree ruling that those who choose not to pay the Kirchensteuer. (Allgemeines Dekret der Deutschen Bischofskonferenz zum Kirchenaustritt) Section II.1 of the decree states that a person who has made the declaration of withdrawal from the Church,
  • May not receive the sacraments of penance, Eucharist, confirmation or Anointing of the Sick - (except in danger of death)
  • May not hold any ecclesiastical offices or functions in the church
  • May not be godfather or godmotther
  • May not be a member of a parochial or diocesan councils
  • Loses active and passive voting rights in the Church
  • May not be a member of the public ecclesiastical associations
This inconsistency is not an original discovery. Sandro Magister and many others have drawn attention to it before, but it is the first time that it has really struck me and I thought it would be of interest to others. Some of those pushing hardest for the admission of the divorced and remarried to Holy Communion are apparently content to deny Holy Communion and other aspects of participation in the life of the Church to those who do not pay a tax that has made the German Church extraordinarily wealthy.

Amerikanische Cistercienserinnen planen Neubau in Form einer Benediktusmedaille [EUCist News]


Das Cistercienserinnenkloster Valley of Our Lady in der Nähe von Madison im US-Bundesstaat Wisconsin hat ein großes Bauvorhaben: Weil sich die Zahl der Nonnen in den letzten zehn Jahren explosionsartig auf aktuell 20 verdoppelt hat, entschied sich der Konvent zum Bau eines neuen Klosterkomplexes. Der Neubau soll Platz für 35 Nonnen bieten und wird vom Architekturbüro Cram and Ferguson entworfen.

Geplant sind für Valley of Our Lady neben einem Gästehaus, einer Bibliothek, einem Refektorium und einer Infirmerie auch ein oktogonales Kapitelhaus sowie ein Neubau der Klosterbäckerei. Der Komplex soll um drei Innenhöfe arrangiert werden; zentrales Element der Anlage wird der Haupthof mit Brunnen. Dieser Bereich sei – nach der Idee der Priorin – urbenediktinisch und wird daher in der Form einer Benediktus-Medaille angelegt.

Eine ähnlich symbolisch angelegte Klosteranlage findet man in Dünamünde (Luftbild, unten), einem ehemaligen Cistercienserkloster 12 km von der lettischen Hauptstadt Riga entfernt.

Das Kloster Valley of Out Lady wurde 1957 in der Diözese Madison gegründet; der alte, sehr beengte Klosterbau stammt noch aus den 1960er Jahren. Die Nonnen leben von der Herstellung von Hostien und anderen Produkten. Website zum Neubau des Klosters hier.

These der 24 bestätigten Thesen der derThomistischen Philosophiebezieht sich auf den sogenannten Hylemorphismus.Entsprechend dieser aristotelisch-thomistischen Theorie ist jeder materielle Gegenstand aus Materie (griechisch: hylé) und Form (griechisch: morphé) zusammengesetzt. Dies gilt auch für den Menschen. Beim Menschen ist die Seele die Form des Körpers. Diese Seele bestimmt somit den Körper bis in seine letzten Bestandteile und macht den Körper zu dem, was er ist, zu einem menschlichen Leib. Der menschliche Leib ist nicht als solcher die Materie. Was wir wahrnehmen, wenn wir einen Menschen sehen, ist der „geformte“ Leib, der Körper, der bereits durch die Form, d.i. die Seele bestimmt ist. Die eigentliche Materie ist immer die materia prima, die völlig unbestimmte, reine Materie, die ohne Form nie existiert. Im Unterschied zur Pflanze oder zum Tier ist aber die menschliche Form, also die Seele des Menschen, in einem gewissen Sinne ohne den Körper existenzfähig.

16. Dieselbe vernunftbegabte Seele wird so mit dem Leib geeint, dass sie dessen einzige substantielle Form ist, und durch sie hat der Mensch, dass er Mensch, Sinnenwesen, Lebewesen, Körper, Substanz und Seiendes ist. Die Seele verleiht dem Menschen also jeden wesenhaften Grad der Vollkommenheit; überdies teilt sie dem Leib den Akt des Seins mit, durch den sie selbst ist.

Der erste Satz der These hebt hervor, dass es nur eine Form, d.h. nur eine menschliche Seele bei jedem Menschen gibt und nicht mehrere. Dies wird deshalb eigens betont, weil es im Mittelalter, durch den Einfluss des Platonismus, eine fast allgemein vertretene Auffassung war, dass der Mensch aus drei Seelenbestandteilen besteht, nämlich einer rationalen (geistigen) Seele, einer sinnlichen Seele und einer vegetativen Seele. Diese Auffassung wurde selbst von Thomas von Aquins Lehrer, Albertus Magnus, vertreten. Thomas betonte dagegen, dass es nur eine Form für jeden materiellen Gegenstand, einschließlich des Menschen geben kann und nicht mehrere. Natürlich bestreitet auch Thomas nicht, dass es beim Menschen Sinnlichkeit und selbst vegetative Funktionen gibt, die der Mensch mit Tieren und Pflanzen gemeinsam hat, aber alle „Bestandteile“ des Menschen werden „überformt“ durch die rationale Seele. Die anderen seelischen Bestandteile besitzen demnach keine Selbständigkeit gegenüber der rationalen Seele.

Diese einzige und einheitliche Form, so heißt es in der These weiter, bestimmt den Menschen zu dem, was er ist: zum Menschen. Der Mensch ist Mensch durch die Geistseele, durch diese bestimmte Form, die alles andere determiniert und als solche auch in allen anderen Teilen gegenwärtig ist. Die Form gestaltet auch die Einheit aller Teile des Körpers, einschließlich der vegetativen und sinnlichen Teile des Menschen. Durch die Form ist der Mensch ein Mensch und dieser Mensch. Diese Bestimmung oder Determinierung ist aber nicht als Wirkursache zu verstehen. Es handelt sich um eine eigene Form der Kausalität, nämlich um die Formursache. Die causa formalis oder formale Kausalität ist etwas anderes als die causa efficiens, die Wirkursache. Alle Wirkursachen folgen erst aus der Formursache, denn jede Entität wirkt entsprechend ihrer jeweiligen Form. Dass der Mensch argumentieren und logisch schlussfolgern kann, folgt aus seiner Form, seiner rationalen Seele. Dazu sind Tiere und Pflanzen nicht in der Lage, obwohl auch sie bestimmte Wirkungen hervorrufen können. Entsprechend seiner rationalen Seele, die den Menschen zum Menschen gestimmt, hat dieser seine ihm eigene Vollkommenheit. Der Begriff „Vollkommenheit“ hat hier eine etwas andere Bedeutung als in unserem Alltagsverständnis. Er meint nur, dass jede Entität, jedes Seiende ihm entsprechende Vermögen, Fertigkeiten, Kräfte etc. hat.

Im letzten Satz wird gesagt, dass die Form der „Akt“ der Materie, beim Menschen der Akt des Leibes ist. Bei Thomas heißt es dazu „forma dat esse“, die Form gibt das Sein. Gemeint ist damit, dass die Form – beim Menschen die Geistseele – die Wirklichkeit des ganzen Seienden, also des Menschen gibt. Die Form ist bei jedem Seienden das, was die Wirklichkeit an die Materie mitteilt, was die Materie verwirklicht. Durch die Form ist eine Entität wirklich, weil die Materie reine Potenz, prima materia, Urmaterie ist und als sich, also für sich selbst und in sich selbst keine Wirklichkeit besitzt. Die Form ist immer das Prinzip der Wirklichkeit, die Materie ist das Prinzip der Möglichkeit.
