My Jesus Mercy [Whispers in the Loggia]

Over the decade and more these pages have been around, especially after the last three years, there really aren't many firsts left to be had.

Even if anything "new" is special, what's just ahead is truly extraordinary: the last time it happened, after all, came at the turn of a millennium by the hand of a saint....


...but this time, it'll all be in Italian.

As never before, tomorrow the entire world will be able to witness the beginning of a Holy Year in the moment as the Pope launches the Jubilee of Mercy for the global church by pushing open the Holy Door of St Peter's at the end of a 9.30am Mass for the feast of the Immaculate Conception, a moment even more intended to mark the 50th anniversary of the close of Vatican II.

Whether by happy Providence, a striking sense of calculation – or, perhaps, a bit of both – the inauguration of this first off-cycle Jubilee ever dedicated to a theme instead of a specific event likewise falls on the 1,000th day of Jorge Bergoglio's ministry as 266th Bishop of Rome. Along those lines, it is deeply telling that – having cribbed an Argentine grandmother's note at very his first Angelus that, without God's forgiveness, "the world wouldn't exist" – Pope Francis made "experiencing God's mercy" his global intention for this December in the monthly papal petitions which he submitted to the Apostleship of Prayer in early 2014, a full 14 months before his declaration of a Holy Year at a Lenten Penance service during which he (again) broke protocol to go Confession himself before guiding others through theirs.

Having spent his Petrine ministry to date showing doors to the world where many thought only walls existed – and journeying to three continents he'd never previously seen in the effort – for Francis, the Catholic "Doorbuster" special that begins (not coincidentally) on Rome's traditional Christmas-shopping launch represents the intended centerpiece of his pontificate: in his own words, no less than a "revolution"... and just its start at that.

While what'll ensue in the global, programmatic sense remains close to the vest – standard procedure for a Supreme Pontiff who's largely been able to steer clear of his Curia's leak-prone ways – perhaps this Jubilee's most feverishly awaited (or feared) part is already on the clock: amid the loud, yet mostly esoteric clamor in the wake of October's Synod on the Family as its papal last word is in the works, Francis' stated prayer for March 2016 begins with a call "that families in need may receive the necessary support."

As – admit it – that's news to you, 'nuff said for now... and whatever other curiosity exists, remember the counsel of the dear Sisters: "Leave room for the Holy Spirit." (...et plus ça change.)

Indeed, in no shortage of ways, this has been a breathtaking year on this beat and then some – and just as exhausting, to boot. The months to come aren't looking to let up much if at all... especially given the costs involved in covering these last few months, though, keeping on here for whatever lies ahead means keeping after the bills this work racks up.

Not that that's easy, but as ever, it is this readership's part.

For just one example, the live text-feed run here over the climactic day of last month's USCCB plenary rang up $850 in server costs due to the traffic that clicked in here for it.

Put simply, folks, when you're reading or watching anything here, this scribe is paying for it... and this latest hit's come on top of the usual costs of covering Plenary Week, on top of what remains to be paid from the PopeTrip, on top of whatever's left over for this scribe's wage, benefits and life, to say nothing of what's yet to come.

Nobody ever said extraordinary times were inexpensive. All that said, though, it's another needed reminder of how Whispers keeps coming your way solely by means of this crowd's support...



Back to the story, in the broad frame as this Jubilee begins, a certain moment looms large in this sinner's mind.

Eerie as the scene now feels, it wasn't all that long ago when Francis George stood over the casket of Andrew Greeley – albeit in very different ways, each a giant of the Stateside Church, but both united, among other things, in knowing that their time wasn't long.

Noting how the celebrated priest-author would take his professor-archbishop to the opera, the long-titanic Francis recalled learning which work was Greeley's favorite....

"And once we were talking about it and I said 'Andy, why do you love La Traviata so deeply?'

And he didn't pause at all. I expected him to say the glorious music, the marvelous melody; instead he said, 'It's the most Catholic of the operas, because in the end – in the end – everyone is forgiven.'"
And so, to one and all, may this Year and its graces be yours in abundance... buckle up.

Had never really paid much attention to St Nicolas... [marcpuck]

Whose feast was celebrated yesterday, beyond the he-became-Santa Claus stories and then also the fact that evidently he punched the arch-heretic Arius in the face at the First Council of Nicaea (those were the days, eh? what a sight it would be, Cardinals Pell and Burke on one side and Cardinals Danneels and Kasper on the other; even Herr Odendahl might not want to put any money on that team...). 

But I did notice at Le Salon Beige a post about the 770th annual procession at Saint-Nicolas-de-Port in Lorraine. The splendid basilica was restored in the 1980s with the financial assistance of an American woman, herself une Portoise, named Camille Croué Friedman. She attributed her rescue from a shipwreck off Cyprus to the Saint's intecession. 

At English Wikipedia, there is an amusing bit of history:

Papal critics threatened with excommunication as “Year of Mercy” begins [Voice of the Family]

Fisichella and FrancisArchbishop Fisichella, President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization, has stirred controversy by suggesting that some criticisms of Pope Francis might result in automatic excommunication.

Archbishop Fisichella made his remarks while explaining how Pope Francis’s new “Missionaries of Mercy” will operate. The 800 “missionaries” will have the power to absolve from penalties previously reserved to the Holy See.

In reference to Canon 1370, which imposes automatic excommunication for “physical violence” against the Roman Pontiff, Archbishop Fisichella said:

“I would say that we need to understand well ‘physical violence,’ because sometimes words, too, are rocks and stones, and therefore I believe some of these sins, too, are far more widespread than we might think.”

Archbishop Fisichella’s comments will be interpreted by many as an attempt to silence faithful Catholics who are deeply concerned by the direction currently being taken by those who hold offices at the highest levels of the Church. Serious concerns have been raised over the last two and half years concerning:

In the face of these and other scandals Catholics have not only the right but also the duty to offer respectful, but forceful, criticism. This grave duty is outlined in Canons 211 and 212 of the Code of Canon Law:

Can. 211 All the Christian faithful have the duty and right to work so that the divine message of salvation more and more reaches all people in every age and in every land.

Can. 212 §1. Conscious of their own responsibility, the Christian faithful are bound to follow with Christian obedience those things which the sacred pastors, inasmuch as they represent Christ, declare as teachers of the faith or establish as rulers of the Church.

§2. The Christian faithful are free to make known to the pastors of the Church their needs, especially spiritual ones, and their desires.

§3. According to the knowledge, competence, and prestige which they possess, they have the right and even at times the duty to manifest to the sacred pastors their opinion on matters which pertain to the good of the Church and to make their opinion known to the rest of the Christian faithful, without prejudice to the integrity of faith and morals, with reverence toward their pastors, and attentive to common advantage and the dignity of persons.

Voice of the Family is confident that Catholics at every level of the Church will continue to fulfil their duty of defending the Catholic faith throughout the “Year of Mercy” and during the years ahead.

Most words are not crimes [In the Light of the Law]

I am not sure what Archbishop Rino Fisichella meant when he said that “we need to understand well ‘physical violence’ [against the pope] because sometimes words, too, are rocks and stones, and therefore I believe some of these sins, too, are far more widespread than we might think.” Yes, we do need to understand the terms of law well but, as the prelate was speaking in the context of faculties to absolve from automatic excommunications, and as there is an automatic excommunication against those who employ physical force against the pope (1983 CIC 1370 § 1), I am guessing that Fisichella might be thinking that ‘harsh language’ against the pope is a canonical crime that makes one liable to excommunication. If so, he is mistaken.

Besides Canon 17 that requires canons to be understood in accord with the proper meaning of their words, and Canon 18 that requires penal canons to be read strictly (i.e., as narrowly as reasonably possible), and Canon 221 § 3 that protects the faithful against canonical penalties not authorized by law, the whole of Book Six of the 1983 Code is redolent with an emphasis (some might say, to an exaggerated degree) on benignity in the application of penalties in the Church.

Now, Canon 1370 criminalizes “vim physicam” against the pope, not “verba aspera” or variants thereon, and I know of no canonical commentary that includes “words” as a species of “physical force” in this context. Indeed, the CLSA New Commentary, the Exegetical Commentary, the Ancora Commentary, and the Urbaniana Commentary—at which point I stopped looking—expressly exclude ‘verbal violence’ from the range of actions penalized under Canon 1370.

To be sure, hateful speech directed against any one is objectively sinful, and if directed against a man of God, let alone a pope, it is especially wrong. Occasionally, speech might rise to level of crime (see e.g., Canon 1369 on expressing insults against the Church or Canon 1373 on inciting animosity against the Apostolic See) but the penalties in such cases are not automatic and do not extend to excommunication. Usually, verbal hate is just a sin (if I may put it that way) not a crime.

Priests may be assured, then, that if penitents confess uttering hateful words against the Holy Father, they may reconcile such sinners in the normal course of the sacrament and need invoke no special faculties or powers to absolve of sin or (non-existent) crime.

Vatican and World Bank unite to launch Year of Mercy with St. Peter’s ‘climate change’ light show [Voice of the Family]

(Pete Baklinski, LifeSiteNews) — The Catholic Church, founded to shed the light of Christ on the world, has quite literally invited the world to shed its light on her. On December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception as well as the opening of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, Pope Francis has allowed climate-change partisans and population-control advocates to project a light show onto the façade and cupola of Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome — the most important church in the Catholic world — so as to “inspire change around the climate crisis.”

The show titled “Illuminating Our Common Home” will project onto St. Peter’s “images of our shared natural world” in order to “educate and inspire change around the climate crisis across generations, cultures, languages, religions and class,” states a press release about the event put out by one of the sponsors.

The Vatican’s spokesperson for the event, Archbishop Rino Fisichella, the president of the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization, called the event “unique…for its genre and for the fact that it is being displayed for the first time on such a significant backdrop.”

“These illuminations will present images inspired of Mercy, of humanity, of the natural world, and of climate changes,” Fisichella said.

Fisichella said that the light show on the Vatican is meant to link Pope Francis’ environment encyclical Laudato si’ with the United Nations Climate Change Conference (Cop21) currently underway in Paris. The Vatican has shown strong support for the conference.  Having the show conclude the opening Year of Mercy celebrations also links the pope’s message about “mercy” to fighting “climate change.”

Life and family leaders around the world remain skeptical about the Paris conference’s alleged agenda of fighting so-called “anthropogenic” global warming, with some warning that “saving the Planet” in climate-speak translates to an anti-human enterprise that targets nations, societies, and families.

The event, billed as “contemporary public art,” is sponsored by organizations named after Greek and Roman pagan gods that push the climate change agenda and by an organization that directly funds abortions in developing countries.

Behind the show

The main financial backer behind the event is the US-led World Bank Group via its Connect4Climate initiative. The World Bank, created in 1945 to rebuild a war-torn Europe, has a long history (here, here, or here) of relentlessly funding abortion and contraception programs in developing nations under the banner of “ending extreme poverty” and “boosting shared prosperity.” Pro-life leaders have denounced the programs time and again as thinly veiled population control programs aimed at reducing populations considered by Western elites to be undesirable. The organization, through its World Bank Spiritual Unfoldment Society (SUS), also has ties to non-Christian religious practices where employees engage in transhumanistic “meditation sessions” that aim at “personal transformation through self-knowledge, understanding, and awakening higher consciousness.”

Vulcan Inc., founded in 1986 by investor and philanthropist Paul G. Allen, is a private company based out of Seattle, Washington, that “strives to create a new kind of future” by “upend[ing] conventional thinking.” The company was deliberately named after the Roman god Vulcan, the deity of destructive fire, whose earliest known shrine existed in Rome at the foot of the Capitoline Hill, close by the Vatican.

Vulcan’s website states that its founder thought the name seemed fitting for a company “whose mission was to find smart solutions for some of the world’s biggest challenges.”

Another partner of the event is Okeanos, an environmentalist foundation begun in 2007 by Dieter Paulmann with the purpose of raising awareness “concerning the various threats our oceans are facing.” The foundation focuses on “planning, financing and implementation of projects that encompass positive change and make a difference.” It rails against what it calls the “sins against climate committed by…the present generation in particular,” which include “man-made environmental pollution (oil slicks, sewage, chemicals, CO2 production)” as well as “noise pollution (overly loud ships’ engines, sonar experiments).”

The foundation is named after the Greek and Roman Titan god “Okeanos” who was held to be the divine personification of the sea whose fish in one hand and serpent in the other signified his gifts of bounty and prophecy.

Obscura Digital, the San Francisco-based organization putting on the actual show, has its name derived from the Latin root meaning “dark.” The company specializes in creating “immersive experiences that will change the way you think about the world around you” using holographic projections, 3D animation, and dynamic visualization.

Obscura’s team of artists, coders, builders, and technologists are masters of manipulation through light and sound. The organization has in the past (here andhere) worked on climate change projects with the UN to show the “effect of human enterprise on the environment” and to issue a “call for global solutions.” The organization’s clients include Apple, Google, Disney, Vulcan Productions, Nike, Nasa, Facebook, and UNESCO.

Dark and forbidding symbolism

There is much dark and forbidding symbolism behind the event and the organizations sponsoring it that is bizarrely connected to pagan occult practices, the worship of nature, and human sacrifice through abortion and population control.

The show is titled “Fiat Lux: Illuminating Our Common Home.” “Fiat Lux” is the first command issued by God at the beginning of creation: “Let there be light.” Instead of the Church presenting Jesus Christ as the light of the world, secular organizations named after pagan gods are literally “obscuring” the Church through their own dazzling light show. St. Paul warns the Corinthians to be on guard about Satan who he says “masquerades as an angel of light.” It’s as if through this phrase the organizers are symbolically taking the place of God and creating the world anew according to their own image and likeness.

The light show takes place on the most important Marian feast day for Catholics, the Immaculate Conception, in which Catholics celebrate Mary being conceived in the womb of her mother Anne without the stain of original sin. Mary has always been viewed by Catholics as an archetype of the Church since she carried Christ within her as the first tabernacle and then bore him into the world. The light show will project onto St. Peter’s, a building representative of Mary, images of earth and animals on her most important feast day. It is amounts to a crude dishonoring of Our Lady.

The World Bank with its hands bloodied by abortion and population control has no place working with the Vatican on a show that allegedly will reveal to the world images of what Archbishop Fisichella called “mercy, of humanity.” This is simply sick and twisted.

The show will certainly contain many “signs and wonders,” but Catholics must decide for themselves how to interpret them.

Wars, politics and alienation [Cum Lazaro]


Although there's been quite a lot I've been tempted to write on recently, it's been very difficult for me to focus on anything else without first talking about Syria and bombing. And since I have had little sense of what I should say about that, I have been left in silence. Not a bad thing maybe...

I've been reading (amongst many other things) Robert Nisbet's 1953 The Quest for Community. And this morning I came across this passage:

The clear tendency of modern wars is to become ever more closely identified with broad, popular, moral aspirations: freedom, self-determination of peoples, democracy, rights, and justice. Because war, in the twentieth century, has become rooted to such an extent in the aspirations of peoples and in broad moral convictions, its intensity and range have vastly increased. When the goals and values of a war are popular, both in the sense of mass participation and spiritual devotion, the historic, institutional limits of war tend to recede further and further into the void. The enemy becomes not only a ready scapegoat for all ordinary dislikes and frustrations; he becomes the symbol of total evil against the forces of good may mobilize themselves into a militant community.

Now this isn't quite applicable to the present case in the UK: certainly, bombing Syria or even more generally the 'war' against ISIS is not popular in the sense of mass participation or even mass support. But one of the things that has paralysed me in expressing any views about the present situation is the 'spiritual devotion' of many public commentators on both sides: whether you are one of those calling Cameron a c*** or one of those sonorously advising the bombing of civilians, there is clearly more spiritual weight being placed on the issue than a difficult practical decision about how best to exercise force.

There's an awful lot that might be said about this, including a recognition that decisions of life and death ought to be taken with a good deal of fear and trembling (although of all the current reactions to the seriousness of the issue, that of fear and trembling in the face of God's Judgment seems least in evidence). But I want to focus on two which I take to be central to that issue of alienation and the desperation to escape from it which Nisbet identifies, among other modern ills, with an obsession with war.

First, there is the modern tendency to concentrate on act based ethics rather than agent based ones: in essence, a focus on the right action rather than being (or becoming) the right person. Catholic ethics (like most ancient ethics) is at its foundation agent based: it is focused on becoming a good person and the attainment of beatitudo (the Beatific Vision of God) rather than simply doing the right action. That's key because for the modern, particularly the progressive, there is a desperate search for and conviction that there is one right answer, and, moreover, that it is essential for each individual to get that answer right. (Part of the problem here is that, in replacing God with the individual's consciousness, the duty of Jove to see everything correctly devolves upon every participant in social media.) For the ancient (and Catholics are very ancient) I am neither God nor (unless I am David Cameron etc) under a particular duty to express a view on a decision I have little understanding of and little influence on. Democracy of course complicates that by turning us all into little legislators, but practical wisdom should remind us how marginal such a decision is to most of our lives and quite how foolish it is to pretend otherwise.

Secondly, there is the tendency to identify politics with salvation. The fundamental problem in regard to Syria is not so much whether the RAF should drop a few bombs on Syria, but how the Mediterranean world -particularly North Africa- can be once more a place where ordinary people can get on with the pursuit of beatitudo. Defeating ISIS (well, denying them territory) might help, but the recent history of Iraq shows how clearly destroying one tyranny doesn't solve the problem of what happens next. The overemphasis on politics amongst moderns shows itself in two ways. There is the tendency to look to politics and the expression of political views (on war and other matters) as the cure for personal dissatisfactions and the meaninglessness of modern life. (Evidence of this among Islamists, MPs and progressives.) Furthermore, there are the unrealistic expectations of what might be achieved in the foreseeable future in the Middle East. One might not go quite as far as Hobbes in suggesting that any stable government would be better than none, but one might take the Augustinian view that the main business of government is essentially to facilitate or at least to allow the really important business of salvation by establishing civic peace. Instead we have the sort of mentality that leads to seeing anything other than the establishment of Hampstead on the Nile as a failure.

There's much more that could be said but I'll leave it there with the critique of overemphasizing the right view of actions we have little part in making at the expense of cultivating our character, and the critique of overemphasizing what politics can achieve rather aiming primarily at the sort of stability that allows the really important permanent things of life to be achieved. A coda. While mulling over what to say here (and now mulling over whether such mulling over is itself a sign of lack of virtue), I receive news of a friend's having been attacked. Not by a terrorist, but a thug screaming at 'Pakis'. (The friend is horrifyingly white but the friend whom he was with I suppose might look like a 'Paki' to someone not too fussy about a victim.) Not unusual I suppose in cities late at night and, in this case, only some relatively minor physical damage done. Possibly nothing to do with current events although somehow I doubt they helped. I can't do much directly about the Middle East, but I can do a great deal about how I react to them. It would be good to grab back, for a start, the word 'dignity' from those who identify it with a hysterical desire to establish their autonomy by getting the state to kill them.

I took great heart from the fact that it was not until he turned 50 that Frodo Baggins began to experience a restless stirring, followed shortly by a visit from Gandalf.

It was not until Gandalf's visit, which came several years after his previous one and 20 years after Bilbo's dramatic departure from the Shire and renunciation of the One Ring, that Frodo learns what even Bilbo did not know. Gandalf, who spent at least 9 long years learning about the Ring, unfolds for the younger Mr Baggins just what it is, along with the inexorable power it exerts over its ostensible owner, and why it is ruthlessly sought after. Additionally, the wizard tells Frodo how he (Frodo) came to possess the Ring. He does so to aid the hobbit in grasping the imminent danger his possession of the Ring poses not only to himself, but the Shire.

As it turns out the dark lord, Sauron, now knows that the Ring is in the Shire and possessed by a Baggins from the now badly deformed hobbit-like creature who possessed the Ring prior to Bilbo: one Gollum, formerly known as Sméagol. Upon learning the true story of how Bilbo came to have the ring, Frodo laments to Gandalf that Bilbo did not kill Gollum when he had the chance. Gollum, while still known as Sméagol, obtained the Ring by murdering his companion Déagol, who found the Ring on the bed of the river Gladden while fishing as Sméagol practiced his strange subterranean botany. It is here that Gandalf's great wisdom is made most manifest.



After listening to Frodo say, "What a pity that Bilbo did not stab that vile creature [Gollum], when he had a chance," Gandalf retorts, "Pity?" The wizard goes on to explain, "It was Pity that stayed his hand. Pity, and Mercy: not to strike without need. And he has been well rewarded . . . Be sure that he took so little hurt from the evil, and escaped in the end, because he began his ownership of the Ring so. With Pity."

Even after apologizing to Gandalf for his gaffe, Frodo goes on to point out that Gollum "deserves death." Gandalf agrees that the deranged creature does, indeed, deserve to die. But he wisely goes on to point out
Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. For even the wise cannot see all ends
And so it seems that waiting for Gandalf differs from waiting for Godot because sooner or later Gandalf turns up. When he arrives things begin to happen, not things noticed by most people apart from those he quietly visits, at least not until the journey is over and the adventures are turned into legends. The adventure to which your are summoned is one you would never choose to undertake on your own and one you know up-front you can't complete by yourself. It is an adventure that stretches you not only to your limits, but, like Bilbo's adventure with the dwarfs, you are stretched well beyond your known and accepted limits, thus causing you to look at yourself in a new way.

Pretend Mothering [Edinburgh Housewife]

I have not looked at my blog in days for, lo, Polish Pretend Son appeared in Edinburgh on Friday. Thus I have been practising conversational Polish, cooking and baking. Alas, Ann Applebaum's gingerbread cake recipe was pronounced "VERY sweet", so I shall try the gingerbread recipe in Sugared Orange next.

Yesterday I went to a St. Nicholas' Day supper and had a delightful time. I even had a cigar, which I have not done in two years. (I think an annual cigar is relatively low risk.) Along with the cigar I had brandy, so now I understand why rich men in books sit around looking pompous while consuming brandy and cigars: complementarity of the substances. By then we were rocking out to Tchaikovsky.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled Advent!

Reading 5: Who and what was the blessed and glorious Mary, always a Virgin, hath been revealed by God by the message of an Angel, in these words, Hail, thou that art full of grace, the Lord is with thee blessed art thou among women. It was fitting that a fulness of grace should be poured into that Virgin who hath given to God glory and to man a Saviour, who hath brought peace to earth, who hath given faith to the Gentiles, who hath killed sin, who hath given law to life, who hath made the crooked ways straight. Verily, she is full of grace. To others grace cometh measure by measure; in Mary grace dwelleth at once in all fulness. Verily, she is full of grace. We believe that the holy Fathers and Prophets had grace; but they were not full of grace. But into Mary came a fulness of all the grace which is in Christ, albeit otherwise (than as it is in Him.) Therefore is it said Blessed art thou among women, that is, Blessed art thou above all women. The fulness of blessing in Mary utterly neutralized in her any effects of the curse of Eve. In her praise Solomon writeth in the Song of Songs, Rise up, my dove, my fair one, for the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. And again, Come from Lebanon, my Spouse, come, thou shalt be crowned.

Reading 6:  Not unjustly then is she bidden to come from' Lebanon, for Lebanon is so named on account of its stainless and glistening whiteness. The earthly Lebanon is white with snow, but the lonely heights of Mary's holiness are white with purity and grace, brilliantly fair, whiter far than snow, sparkling with the gifts of the Holy Ghost she is undefiled like a dove, all clean, all upright, full of grace and truth. She is full of mercy, and of the righteousness that hath looked down from heaven, and therefore is she without stain because in her hath never been any corruption. She hath compassed a man in her womb, saith holy Jeremiah, but she conceived not by the will of fallen man. The Lord, saith the Prophet, hath created a new thing in the earth; a woman shall compass a man.  

Reading 7: Verily, it is a new thing. Verily, it was a new work of power, greater than all other works, when God, Whom the world cannot bear, and Whom no man shall see and live, entered the lodging of her womb, breaking not the blissful cloister of her virgin flesh. And in her body He was borne, the Infinite inclosed within her womb. And from her womb He came forth, so that it was fulfilled which was spoken of the Prophet Ezekiel, saying, This gate shall be shut, it shall not be opened, and no man shall enter in by it; because the Lord, the God of Israel, hath entered in by it, therefore it shall be shut. xliv. 2. Reading 9: From the Holy Gospel according to Luke: Luke 1:26-28: In that time, the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And so on.

Hail, Mary, full of grace, holier than the Saints, higher than the heavens, more glorious than the Cherubim, more honourable than the Seraphim, and the most worshipful thing that the hands of God have made. Hail, O dove, bearing in thy beak the olive-branch of peace that telleth us of salvation from the spiritual flood, dove, blessed omen of a safe harbour, whose wings are of silver, and thy feathers of gold, shining in the bright beams of the Most Holy and Light-giving Spirit.
